Steps to Make a Difference

  • Educate Yourself

When you know about a topic, you can make more informed decisions regarding that topic and your role in it. I recommend you do additional research on fast fashion and it’s social and environmental impacts. The United Nations website has lots of helpful information.

  • Buy Secondhand

Buying secondhand clothes from thrift stores or online resale marketplaces are a great way to cut down on your carbon footprint and the water pollution caused by manufacturing new clothes. You can find many unique, one-of-a-kind pieces that represent your personal style. Thrifting is a great step to adopt a more sustainable lifestyle.

  • Spread the Word

The more people know, the bigger difference we can make. There is strength in numbers, so tell people you know about the effects of their fashion choices on the environment and other communities. Raise awareness in your community and bring issues up to local lawmakers.

  • Resell Your Clothes

If you have old clothes you no longer want, instead of throwing them away, sell them in a marketplace like Poshmark. Selling old clothes is the best way to get rid of clothes, because thrift stores have to keep cleaning out clothes that aren't being bought. Thrift stores throw away a lot of clothes if they aren't bought in a few weeks, because they get so many new items.

  • Buy Intentionally

Make changes in the way you buy clothes. Buy fewer clothes every year and wear them for longer. Make sure you rotate through everything in your closet. Buy clothes from eco-friendly and sustainably minded companies. Here’s a list of some:

  • Mend Old Clothes

Mending is another great way to avoid throwing away clothes. There are many unique ways to mend your clothes, and add your own personal touches. I like the book Mending Matters by Katrina Rodabaugh.
